Movements of the Mind

For the first solo show from artist Zach Wade, I was commissioned by Twelve Thirty Four to write an artist introduction for the show’s entrance, and creative prose to accompany the nine paintings on display.

Three treatments of the artist introduction were submitted for the client to choose from.

Introduction text on display.

A narrative vignette was written for each of the show’s paintings, influenced by ekphrasis, a literary exercise to produce vivid written descriptions of visual works of art. Each narrative was listed on the artist’s website alongside the corresponding artwork and could be accessed via QR code at the show.

Text for Good Life.
Text for Woman in Brown.
Text for Dancing in Blue.

The structure of the writing was influenced by conversations between myself and the artist prior to the show, and by the style of the paintings.

Each narrative could be read alone as an individual piece, or combined to form an expanded narrative exploring our shifting internal thoughts through the course of a day; an underlying theme of the show.
